Are you thinking of retiring in the Philippines or perhaps just coming here for a holiday.
What a wonderful thought retirement in the philippines.
Hello my name is John Griffiths and I have been living here in the Philippines for quite some time and I am very happy to be here. I am originally from the United Kingdom Southend on Sea to be precise. What a change this has been but it is not for everyone, if you are thinking of retiring here you really should visit this place many times before you finally decide. Things are very different here in fact totally different to anything you are used to back home. The Philippines may not be for you, but I don’t want to be negative. The Philippines Expat Survival Guide is below. You really should read this if you are coming here for your retirement or coming here to stay for a long period.
Although I have lived here for some time now I have to say that I have never encountered the kind of poverty that I have seen here. The vast amount of people live well below the poverty line. The general infrastructure falls well below any standards that we are used to in the west. So what can we do about this? well when people such as us come over here we are able to put money into the economy by buying houses and giving people work to carry out all sorts of jobs.
This is certainly one of those places we see the haves and have nots. If you have money you can live rather well here because the cost of living is quite low. You will not be able to get everything that you could get back home but you will certainly be able to get most of your favourites. The shopping malls are huge, believe me you will not have seen anything quite like it. Seems out of context within a relatively poor country and particularly when you travel to Manila which of course is the capital city.
I believe the Mall of Asia is one of the biggest shopping malls in South East Asia and it’s here in Manila. Most of the big names have shops there and the amount of large shopping malls that are here is amazing. Where do all the people get all that money to spend and keep these shops going. Go into any of the shopping malls and they are packed with people. Bit of a contradiction here between a poor country and so many places to spend money.
I think it’s got to be down to personal matters and the chances that people are getting in life. If you are well connected here and your family has the resources to give you a good start then you are very lucky indeed. The vast amount of people here are not so lucky and if you start out with no connections and no money it is an uphill struggle.
There appears to be little or no state help for people here. Trying to earn money here is not easy, for example $3 per day? and your food and clothes for you and your family comes out of this. Think about it how do you invest anything in your future because you have spent all your money. What if you have no job, then you earn nothing and get little or no help.

If you have any questions about life here in the Philippines send me a message and I will do my best to answer you. Are you are used to using your computer to get your road tax sorted out or do your shopping. Do you use your computer to pay your bills or to arrange your car insurance then you have a shock instore. Almost everything here is to do with standing in line and visiting various numbered windows? some of those 5 minute jobs that you are used to can take several hours here. Yes it’s different here all right in fact so much so you will not believe it.
